Summer jobs: From busboy to owner

As a 15-year-old Downers Grove North student, Danny Glover took a summer job at Skuddlebutt’s Pizza in 2003 because he wanted to save up for a car. Eventually he was able to save enough to purchase his mother’s Ford Explorer for a few thousand dollars.

Now, eight years later, at the age of 23, Glover drives a Hummer. And that summer job? It turned into a career after Glover bought the pizza joint from former owner Bill Gall, a testament, Glover says, to working hard – even at a seemingly temporary job.

“Pretty much I started here as a busboy in high school,” he said adding that at the time he didn’t fathom that he would someday own the place.

Just last week he was tapped to cater an event for teachers and staff from the same high school district he graduated from five years ago.

When it comes to summer jobs, the best advice he could give teenage job-seekers is learning the lesson of hard work – whether you end up serving pizza in a banquet room or heading up the board room, it will serve you well, he said.

“Do as much as you can make yourself useful,” which Glover said means “always being available, always being the go-to guy.”

“It worked out in my benefit. I showed my work ethic and that is what it takes to own a business. It’s all about work ethic.”

If somebody sees that they’ll appreciate you, he said.
